We had mind to put out Sacred Rose Tallow Balm this summer, certainly by Tu B'Av, but it wasn't ready. We often think that perfection takes time, but really Divine timing is perfect. Now, we can see how perfectly it belongs in the season of Elul.
We often associate this time of year with trying to fix ourselves and get ourselves back on track as we prepare for Rosh Hashana. Its also an extremely busy time with preparations for yom tov and the start of the school year.
The Lesson of the Rose
But there is something to be learned from the rose. A rose doesn't have to do anything other than being a rose. We delight in simply being in it's presence, seeing it, smelling it because it is inherently beautiful and perfect.
Sacred Roses of Elul
Elul stands for "Ani L'Dodi vDodi li- haroeh bashoshanim". Hashem is in the field and He is grazing amongst us -the roses. we are in the month of return/teshuva to whom we truly are: sacred roses of innate perfection. Maybe that's why the word teshuva also has the letters "shev", to sit, which connotes stillness. And it's related to the word "Shabbos", the day of rest and completion.
Ani l'Dodi v'Dodi Li
The acronym of Elul is Ani LeDodi veDodi Li- I am to my beloved and my beloved is to me. Elul is really about roses and love. The Shechina is called a rose. Delicate but resilient. Teshuva is remembering our inherent Divine perfection, like a rose that is beautiful and whole. It's interesting that today is Chai Elul. The birthday of the Baal Shem Tov. It is written that on chai elul is when our teshuva turns to teshuva m'ahava- teshuva of love. And teshuva of joy.

Bina
Sacred Rose has a distinctly floral and joyful feminine scent. That is also connected to Elul. The numerical value of Elul is the same as bina- the feminine trait of intuition and understanding. Bina yeseira- Extra intuition and discernment are given to women.
The sign of the month of Elul is virgo -a woman. Virgos are known to be perfectionists and a little obsessed with details. Something that we are all involved in during this time of year.
So, how can we access this Divine perfection? Being perfect is really not all that complicated. It comes naturally when we use the trait of bina- intuition and discernment. In whatever it is you are doing, the question to ask is: are your roots reaching the living waters of torah and accessing its radiant light? What more does a rose need to blossom?
